Historia
In the 11th century, Europe—concerned about the expansion of Islam and the split of the Christian empire into Catholic and Orthodox branches—felt compelled to reclaim the Holy Land and take control of the Holy Sepulchre.
Thus, in 1096, the First Crusade began, successfully conquering Jerusalem in 1099 and establishing the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1187, after Jerusalem was taken by Salah ad-Din, Europe launched the Third Crusade in an attempt to retake the city. Although later Crusades managed to conquer much of the Holy Land, they failed to reestablish Jerusalem as the capital. Eventually, in 1291, the Christian empire lost its final stronghold to the Mamluks, having made Acre its capital in the meantime.
The Templars were a religious order known as warrior monks. This unique status was granted by Pope Urban, who allowed them to fight despite the monastic prohibition against killing—because they were battling heretics.
These warrior monks were categorized by their mission:
The Templars protected pilgrimage routes and holy sites.
The Hospitallers cared for pilgrims and the wounded in hospitals.
The Lazarists were monks afflicted with leprosy who also cared for Christian lepers.
In Acre, it was the Hospitallers who established their headquarters and built many of the structures that can still be seen today. -
The Barons’ HallsMain hall of the Hospitaller Order.
This hall was built in the 12th century by the Knights Hospitaller for meetings and order activities. It is one of the few remaining buildings from the Crusader period in Acre. The hall is a stunning example of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, featuring rounded arches and ribbed vaults.

Templar TunnelsUnderground tunnels connecting to the port.
The Templars built a network of tunnels and underground passages in Acre to connect their fortresses and protect themselves from enemy attacks. These tunnels were used to transport supplies and troops, and also served as escape routes during sieges. Narrow and dark, they were equipped with traps and defenses to ward off intruders.
