Jaffa GateIconic entrance to the Old City, built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538.
Jaffa Gate is one of the most iconic entrances to Jerusalem’s Old City. Built in 1538 by order of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, this gate has served for centuries as the main access point for pilgrims and travelers arriving from the port of Jaffa. On the wall, you can see an Arabic inscription left by Suleiman, noting the date of the construction. Above the entrance, another inscription blesses Abraham with a version of the shahada (الشهادة = the testimony: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God”), but in this version, Muhammad is replaced with Abraham, “the friend of God.” In Arabic, the gate is called Bab-El-Halil, with “Halil” referring to Hebron, the city of Abraham.
