The girls’ school was founded in the late 19th century and was one of the first to teach Hebrew as the primary language. In 1916, during World War I, much of the Jewish population was expelled by the Turks and the school was closed. It reopened in 1918 under British rule, led by Yehiel Yehieli. After his death, the school was renamed in his honor and operated until 1972. Today, it is the renowned Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theater.
